The Big Tent and Working at Quartzsite

Well we are still at Quartzsite. For those of you who don't know what Quartzsite is; it is a town of  about 4000 that is invaded with about 100,000 RV's in the winter.  They say it is something everyone should come and see at least once.

a place where you can have your rv worked on
In the background you can see how crowded it it, this is downtown Quartzsite

There are vendors that line the street
It is absolutely amazing.  RV's everywhere.  Some places you pay and other places you can park for free, but you have to move every 14 days if you park where it's free.  We paid $40 for 2 weeks.  What's nice about where we are at is there is a dump station and water here.  This is what you call boom docking.  You have to use your holding tanks and your generator.  When we leave here next week we will know just how much it cost us to run the generator.  Hopefully it won't be too much of a shock.

all those little dots are rv's

If you are with a group you park together, if not you park off by yourself

We met up with a group while we were here, but they have all left and now we are all by ourselves.  It was fun while it lasted.  We had a fire almost every night, as long as it wasn't to windy.

We are waiting for the fire

This was us when the group was here, only we moved to the other side of the trailer to make room for everyone
We had about 10 rigs at one time

This is us now,  we are the only one here of the group we were with
We are in the desert so there is a lot of dust.  Everything is covered in dust.   So when we leave, everything will need cleaning.

One of the hazards of  rv living are your slides.  The slides are just out there and if you don't watch where you are going, sometimes you make a connection.  Ed's sister says he is just an accident waiting to happen.  Some people use the noodles you buy for your pool.  They cut them and put them on the corners because of this very thing.  I asked Ed if he wanted to do that and his reply was maybe if it happened again.  This isn't the first time he has done this and probably won't be the last.  So go figure, why would he want to wait.  That's Ed for you.

And he wants to wait until he does this again before he fixes the problem

Now for me working.  I actually took a job at the " Big Tent" fair.  One of the couples here took a job and they needed one more person, so they asked me.  I thought "why not, it will put a little cash in my pocket".    There is a big tent with all kinds of vendors.  Out side there are more vendors and food wagons.  We were in a wagon but all we were doing was  giving out  samples.  We cooked potatoes and put  seasoned salt on them and boiled water and added a french dip to it.  Toni and Doug were my partners.  After a few days, Toni and I stayed inside and Doug stood outside and tried to get the people to come up and try the samples.  There really wasn't enough work to keep 3 people busy and it really did help getting people to come up and try the product.  We were yelling out the window "free samples of hash brown potatoes seasoned with Johnny season salt".  Try saying that all day long.  By the end of the day your tongue  can really get twisted.

The vendor was Johnny's fine foods which sells spices.  The boss, Steve, and his friend Ralph did all the selling.  Steve was really a nice guy to work for.  He was always telling us how much he appreciated us.  This was his first time at this.  He had just bought this business and was trying  promote it.  So this was all new to him.  He turned the inside over to us and it was a learn as you go project.  But, it all came together.

It actually went pretty fast.  Now I can say I have been a real "carnival person" although without the rides.

In the background you will see the "Big Tent"

Here I am working

This is the sunrise I saw leaving for work one morning
After we had been here for about 3 weeks, someone mentioned to Ed about Abe Lincoln.  Ed didn't know what he was talking about.  It is right behind us and we never noticed it.

Abe Lincoln
So how observant are we?

Well that's all for now.  I have a lot more to tell you so I am going to try to do another one in a couple of days.  I keep saying I am going to get better at keeping the blog up to date, but I keep getting behind.  Oh well, I am retired and you get slower after retirement.

I have to say, Quartzsite has been fun.

Bye for now.   Lyn and Ed

  2. Wow ... that was certainly a lot but once you get caught up it's not so hard. Good job. Quartzsite definitely is a place folks need to visit at least once.

  3. Good post Lyn. You have a much better "Abe Lincoln" than we do. I sure hope our paths cross again.
